Ligature-Resistant Justice Reform Space

Ligature-Resistant Justice Reform Space

Healthy Environments for Rehabilitation

what is a ligature point infographic

To help protect inmates in custody and to provide a safe environment for all, we offer a new line of ligature-resistant fixtures—Secur-Care® is designed for this progressive new approach to incarceration. We manufacture these ligature-resistant plumbing fixtures with “universal design” principles in mind, meaning that they can be used throughout the facility, not just in specified behavioral health treatment areas.

We will also highlight five of the leading rehabilitation design trends at the forefront of this progressive movement—aesthetic design; building design; designing for autonomy and privacy; mental health spaces that promote healing; and spaces that accommodate vocation, exercise, and spiritual growth. We will do this by showcasing what some of the world’s most forward-thinking justice systems, designers, and architects are doing to promote rehabilitation and reduce recidivism.

Aesthetic Design

Prisons are beginning to adopt healthcare evidence-based design concepts demonstrating that access to natural light and fresh air, connectedness to nature, and thermal and acoustic comfort have a positive and beneficial impact on mental state and social behavior. Healthy environments reduce the frequency and severity of anti-social behaviors and violence, as well as reducing stress and anxiety.

evidence-based healthcare building design

Building Design

When rehabilitation is the ultimate goal, the overall size of the prison needs to shrink. For effective reform, experts suggest no more than 1,000 inmates. This small number allows employees and administrators to get to know the inmates better and facilitate an individual approach to their rehabilitation. Accounting for individual inmates’ strengths and weaknesses provides a greater opportunity to prepare inmates for successful transitions out of the system and into society.

correctional facility design for autonomy and inmate privacy

Design for Autonomy and Privacy

Giving inmates the freedom to move about the housing unit gives them some feeling of control over their environment. This autonomy encourages self-managed behavior and responsible choices. Experts also encourage providing a degree of privacy for sleeping and personal hygiene, which promotes a sense of personal dignity. Inmates should be encouraged to personalize their space and be given the ability to adjust the lighting, with the idea being that encouraging respect for themselves and each other will better prepare them for life once they leave the justice system.

correctional facility design for better mental health

Design for Mental Health

Over half of all prisoners in U.S. correctional facilities have experienced abuse, trauma, and/or mental illness. The Bureau of Justice Statistics says this is true for 75 percent of female inmates and 63 percent of male inmates. Instead of seeing these inmates as prisoners, they should be viewed as patients and a priority should be placed on their physical and mental health. Rehabilitation efforts for those with addiction or mental health issues will look very different from prisoners who do not struggle with these illnesses. That difference should be reflected in the spaces where they are housed.

spaces that accommodate education and vocation for inmates

Spaces that Accommodate

Education and vocation are crucial ingredients in rehabilitation, so care should be given to educational spaces. Correctional facilities can and should adopt best practices for instructional design of high schools and colleges to ensure not only a secure environment but one conducive to learning. A combination of flexible learning spaces for academic and vocational education and areas for quiet study and reflection is needed.

Ligature Resistance and Universal Design

Combination Toilet-Lavatory

Our ligature-resistant combination toilet-lavatories (“combys”) feature a durable, stainless steel structure with a number of integrated features designed to provide ligature resistance. The rounded frame and wing sides minimize ligature points and offer a high level of vandal resistance. The hemispherical push button and bubbler and ligature-resistant drain also contribute to the safety features of this product. The stainless steel can be coated with white Enviro-Glaze® at no extra cost for a softer appearance.
